Okay, it’s not quite that simple but it’s vitally important that you use Facebook properly in both building your list and in selling to that list.

Big numbers: Facebook is now more popular than Google. Millions, if not zillions of users use it every day. It is a compulsion with lots and lots of people. What you need to know is how to tap into this compulsion so that you can make money online.

First of all there are two main aspects of Facebook that you need to know. There is a personal page where you can post news, comments about what you have been doing or even are doing, post videos, communicate with friends, add friends and so on.

My personal page can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php

The other aspect of Facebook that is particularly exciting to marketers is the Fan Page or “like” page. This is the professional side if you like. A Fan Page looks like this: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Newcastle-Business-Academy-Ltd/205956136116563

What you need to do now is go to www.facebook.com and set up your personal page if you are not already a member. This is free and it’s easy to set up. You just fill in the details requested like any normal site you are signing up to, give then your email address and create a password. Once your account is live, you will have to reply to an email to activate it then you simply login using your email address and the password you created when you signed up.

Be careful what information you make available on your personal page. Facebook is conscious that some information has proved invaluable to people like stalkers and encourages you to allow access to some information only to people you know and trust. So add your friends and learn how to use Facebook until you get the feel of it and understand what is going on.

The next step after you have become familiar with Facebook via your personal page is to create your “like” page or Fan Page and invite people to visit it.

Why you need two different pages is quite simple. On your personal page you are limited to 5,000 friends. Now at the moment that may seem like a lot but once you get going as a serious marketer you will see that that number is chicken feed.

On your Fan Page the number of people you can have is unlimited. Also you can have an opt-in box, a sign up page so you can grow your list.

Once you have a good list of friends – in fact you don’t need to wait once you’ve created your Fan Page – your aim is to encourage your friends to move to your “like” page.

You must keep up to date to get the best out of Facebook. Friends expect to hear from you daily. If you leave long gaps then your friends will stop coming to your page to see what you are doing. You don’t have to write screeds. Just snippets of interesting information that people want to hear about.

Using Google Analytics you can track where your traffic comes from and your aim should be to make Facebook the number one source for your free traffic. Facebook is an amazing viral tool and it is free! Use it.

There are two main tools that make Facebook viral. One is the wall and the other is your newsfeed. The wall is where people write their comments on their own page. The newsfeed is the homepage for your Facebook page. It keeps you up to date with what your friends are writing on their walls or on their friends’ walls.

Everyone on Facebook has a wall. On this wall you can write “What’s on your mind”: this is called a status. So if I write on my wall “Ian Heslop is looking forward to taking his grandchildren to Orlando for the first time” it will appear as a newsfeed on friends’ walls.

The wall is the place that shows activity on Facebook. Any comments you make, any comments on photos, friends’ photos, friends added and so on will appear here. If people want to write publically they can do so here. For example I might write “Hey, Bob. What time are we meeting in the pub before the match?”  This will stay on my wall but it will appear in my friends’ newsfeeds.

You can also write a private message here so if I don’t want anyone else to know where I’m going I make it a private message for Bob only.

Besides adding status updates you can add photos, attach a video, attach an event and add a link. This ability to add a link is very important and can be very powerful if you use Facebook properly.
The best way to look at Facebook is to compare it to email marketing. In my series of guides to email marketing I constantly stress the need to build up a relationship. You must give away quality products. You cannot sell all the time. So when posting comments, uploading photos and videos and writing status updates you must always strive to create a balance between good quality material of value and building relationships. The promoting of products comes after you have done this.

If your Facebook page is just full of links to products you are promoting you will be wasting a golden opportunity because people will not get the chance to get to know you. “Know” first, sell second. Write these four words down on a stick it note and stick it on your computer.
